Hewerdine and Whizz-Kidz

There are an estimated 70,000 disabled children and young people who are waiting for appropriate mobility equipment in the UK. With this in mind, Hewerdine became Whizz-Kidz sole strategic partner in 2009.

Our aim together, is to ensure every disabled child has an opportunity to lead a fully inclusive and individual life. Nationwide assessment clinics are set up between Whizz-Kidz and Hewerdine to provide essential mobility equipment – powered, manual and recreational equipment to give young disabled people the independence they deserve to enjoy a more active childhood. Whizz-Kidz and Hewerdine work closely to achieve their goal of “a child in a chair, in a day”.

Many children are given the opportunity to take their mobility equipment away on the day of clinic. Due to our close partnership we also work with Whizz-Kidz in maintaining their current fleet of wheelchairs nationwide, refurbishing chairs and also helping them manage current NHS supply contracts.

Whizz-Kidz provide young people with vital mobility equipment to help to transform their lives. And with training to help them get the most out of their equipment, support to develop life skills, and opportunities to meet and have fun, Whizz-Kidz help them to be something special…a kid.

Giving a disabled child a wheelchair is just the start of their journey with Whizz-Kidz. All around the country disabled children and young people are meeting and making friends at their growing network of local clubs.

They’re having fun whizzing around obstacle courses, knocking over skittles, doing wheelies and learning about boring but important things like road safety at the Whizz-Kidz wheelchair skills courses.

They’re forming campaign groups and meeting MPs, contacting the press, and designing campaign badges and posters. And because growing up can be a bit scary, they’re taking part in the Whizz-Kidz work placement programme and building confidence at the Whizz-Kidz life skills events. Oh, and there’s quite a few parties going on, too!
