Hewerdine and the NHS

Hewerdine have worked in partnership with several NHS Trusts for over 25 years.  This has meant we have been able to develop our service to suit the individual needs of each Trust.

As approved repairers we are able to offer a first class nationwide service and our trained assessors are available to support therapists at clinics, in their choice of mobility equipment.

Hewerdine are an NHS approved contractor, proving we have 'quality of service' allowing us to accept vouchers from the NHS Voucher Scheme.

Hewerdine and the NHS Voucher Scheme

The NHS Voucher Scheme has been set up to allow disabled people access to a larger range of manual wheelchairs.

You can fund or part-fund a manual wheelchair using the NHS Voucher Scheme – for assistance in leasing or purchasing a powered wheelchair, take a look at our Motability page.

After you have been assessed for a wheelchair at your clinic, you then are able to chose from the following 3 options:

Standard option

You are provided with a manual wheelchair that will be supplied, repaired and maintained free of charge from the NHS.

Partnership option

You can choose an alternative manual wheelchair to the type you are assessed as needing. This means you can buy a manual wheelchair of a higher standard than that which the NHS Wheelchair Service currently supplies, by using the voucher. The NHS Voucher reflects the value of the wheelchair originally recommended - you then pay the difference in cost between this and your preferred manual wheelchair.

You have to choose an 'approved supplier' when purchasing your wheelchair  - this is where Hewerdine comes in; as an approved NHS supplier, you can redeem your voucher against the manual wheelchair of your choice from our fantastic range here online.

The NHS will ensure your manual wheelchair is repaired and maintained.

Independent option

You can buy the manual wheelchair outright yourself,  you are then responsible for its repair and maintenance. However, the NHS Voucher Scheme voucher you receive will include an amount towards the anticipated costs of repair and maintenance.

At Hewerdine we offer a range of Servicing and Maintenance packages, for both manual and powered wheelchairs.

Things to Remember:

  • The voucher period is generally five years – check with your clinic.
  • You will not normally be entitled to a new voucher until after this 5 year period.
  • If your manual wheelchair becomes unsuitable within this 5 year period - you will be eligible for a reassessment of your needs.
  • You cannot exchange the voucher for cash or any other service provided by Hewerdine.
  • If you buy a wheelchair privately from a commercial company or individual, you cannot 'claim back' the money from the NHS Wheelchair Service.
  • The voucher is non-taxable - it does not affect any disability benefits you are currently receiving.

Up-to-date information on the NHS Voucher Scheme can also be found on direct.gov.uk.
